PHOTOCHEM Gum Arabic acacia powder per 1kg (05525-1000PP)
Gum Arabic (also known as acacia gum or acacia powder) is a natural, water-soluble resin obtained from the sap of acacia trees, primarily Acacia senegal and Acacia seyal. It appears as a fine powder or granules and dissolves easily in water to form a viscous solution. In photography, gum arabic is primarily used in the historical process called gum bichromate printing. In this technique, gum arabic is mixed with a dichromate sensitizer and pigment, then applied to paper. When exposed to UV light, the gum hardens in proportion to the light received, creating an image. After exposure, the print is developed in water, which washes away the unhardened gum and pigment, leaving behind the image. Gum arabic is valued in this process for its binding properties, flexibility, and transparency, allowing for layered, painterly, and richly toned images. It is a key ingredient in many alternative and fine art photographic printing methods.
