Potassium dichromate (chemical formula: K₂Cr₂O₇) is a bright orange-red crystalline compound that is a strong oxidizing agent. It is highly toxic and carcinogenic, so it must be handled with great care.

Use in Photography:

In photography, potassium dichromate is primarily used in alternative and historical photographic processes, such as carbon printing, gum bichromate printing, and photoengraving. When mixed with certain colloids like gelatin or gum arabic, potassium dichromate becomes light-sensitive. Upon exposure to UV light, it hardens the colloid, creating an image-forming layer.

This chemical is valued for its ability to create permanent, high-contrast images with deep tonal range in artistic printing processes. However, due to its toxicity, safer alternatives are often sought, and its use is mostly limited to specialized fine art photography today.
