PHOTOCHEM Sodium Dichromate per 500gm (05543-0500)
Sodium Dichromate (chemical formula: Na₂Cr₂O₇) is a bright orange, crystalline compound and a powerful oxidizing agent. It is highly toxic and must be handled with great care due to its carcinogenic and corrosive properties. In photography, sodium dichromate is used primarily in alternative and historical photographic processes, such as carbon printing, gum bichromate, and photogravure. Its main role is as a sensitizer: when mixed with gelatin or gum arabic and exposed to UV light, it hardens in proportion to the amount of light received. This light-sensitive behavior allows for the creation of detailed, permanent images on a variety of surfaces. Despite its effectiveness, its use has declined due to health and environmental concerns, with safer alternatives often preferred when possible.
