PHOTOCHEM Pyrocatechol 250gm (05502-0250)
Pyrocatechol (chemical formula: C₆H₄(OH)₂), also known as catechol or 1,2-dihydroxybenzene, is a colorless organic compound that belongs to the phenol family. It is a dihydroxybenzene isomer, with two hydroxyl groups attached to adjacent carbon atoms on a benzene ring. In black-and-white photography, pyrocatechol is used as a developing agent. Like pyrogallol, it reduces exposed silver halide crystals in film or photographic paper to metallic silver, forming the visible image. Pyrocatechol-based developers are valued for producing images with fine grain, high sharpness, and excellent tonal range. Developers containing pyrocatechol can also produce a slight stain in the film’s emulsion, which acts as a mask to improve contrast, especially useful in alternative and contact printing processes. While less commonly used today, it remains appreciated by fine art photographers for its distinctive rendering and archival qualities.
