Lord Baden-Powell
Lord Robert Baden-Powell of Gilwell, Founder of Scouting
and World Chief Scout died in Kenya on January 8, 1941 at the age of
83. Soldiers and Scouts, black and white escorted the coffin to a simple
grave at Nyeri, within sight of Mount Kenya.
Scouting is born of an idea. The idea of a man who was
a national hero of his time. The fact that nearly 100 years later Scouting
continues to grow is testament that his was one of the great ideas in
history.
A long serving soldier of great standing, Robert Baden-Powell was fed
up with man's constant habit of making war. His idea? That only through
the education of the youth of the world, can world peace and understanding
be achieved.
Although not the term used at the time, Scouting can be described as
the world's first and biggest peace movement. Today over 250 million
people in the world are Scouts or former Scouts. Perhaps Scouting has
played a significant role in the fact that not since 1945 has there
been a world war?
