The software indicated below is provided to those who agree to the terms of the software license at the bottom of this page. When the user selects the Accept and begin download option outside of the frame, agreement to the terms of the software license is inferred and the user is bound by the terms of the Nikon Corporation (hereafter “Nikon”) License Agreement. Be sure that you have read and understand the terms of the license agreement before initiating download of this software.
  • This service provides software for upgrading D3 A firmware to Ver. 1.10 and B firmware to Ver. 1.10. When performing this Firmware Upgrade, be sure to upgrade both A and B firmware. Once firmware upgrade is complete, turn the camera off and then on again. If these latest firmware versions are already installed in your camera, you need not proceed with download or installation of this Firmware Upgrade. Current firmware versions can be verified from the Firmware version item in the camera's setup menu.
  • Be aware that proper operation of your D3 is not guaranteed if either A or B firmware is upgraded to Ver. 1.10 while the other firmware is not upgraded.
  • Be sure to read the section, Modifications enabled with upgrade of A and B firmware from Ver. 1.00 to Ver. 1.10, before upgrading the firmware.

What's New?

Modifications enabled with upgrade of A and B firmware from Ver. 1.00 to Ver. 1.10:

  • A Vignette control item has been added to the shooting menu. For information regarding supported lenses, see the supplemental manual.
  • A Focus point brightness item has been added to the a6: Focus point illumination setting in the Autofocus category of Custom Settings.
  • The Highlights playback display option has been moved from Display mode > Basic photo info > Highlights in the playback menu to Display mode > Detailed photo info > Highlights.
  • When shutter speed and/or aperture are locked with shooting in live view mode, using the "L" (command lock) button, an "L" icon is now displayed in the camera monitor.
  • The size and color of "Demo" displayed in the monitor with playback, when No memory card? in the Custom Settings is set to Enable release, have been modified.
  • The range of settings available for ISO sensitivity settings > ISO sensitivity auto control > Minimum shutter speed in the shooting menu has been increased from 1/250–1s to 1/4000–1s.
  • When a compatible Speedlight or Wireless Speedlight Commander is used, the AF assist illuminator now lights regardless of the focal length.
  • When shooting in hand-held live view mode and the frame is magnified prior to autofocusing, operation has been modified so that display returns to the magnified display rather than full-frame display.
  • In some rare cases, the image area visible through the viewfinder and the image area actually recorded differed when Image area > Choose image area in the shooting menu was set to DX format (24x16). This issue has been resolved.
  • In some rare cases, white balance was not accurately calculated for images captured at a shutter speed of around 1/4s in P and A exposure modes. This issue has been resolved.
  • When attempting to crop images at an aspect ratio of 4 : 3 using the Trim option in the retouch menu, the cropped image did not have an accurate 4 : 3 aspect ratio. This issue has been resolved.

For further information regarding the new firmware, download the supplemental manual, D3_FirmUp_En.pdf (150 KB). Adobe's Acrobat Reader must be installed on your computer to view this file.

Upgrading the Firmware for the D3

—Macintosh—

Thank you for choosing a Nikon product. This guide describes how to upgrade the camera firmware for the D3.
If you are not confident that you can perform the update successfully, the update can be performed by a Nikon service representative.

The D3 has two sets of firmware, A and B, which must be updated separately. After updating the A firmware, repeat steps 4–5, below, to upgrade the B firmware.

Important
The camera may be damaged if power is interrupted or camera controls are operated during the update. Do not turn the camera off, remove or disconnect the power source, or operate camera controls during the update. If the update is not completed successfully and the camera becomes inoperable, take the camera to a Nikon-authorized service representative for inspection.

Get ready

To upgrade the camera firmware, you will need:

•

The camera

•

A UC-E4 USB cable or a memory card reader

•

One of the following power sources:

—An EH-6 AC adapter

—A fully-charged EN-EL4a/EN-EL4 rechargeable Li-ion battery

•

A Nikon-approved memory card that has been formatted in the camera.

AD3_0110.bin

Camera A firmware

BD3_0110.bin

Camera B firmware

Mac OS X Version 10.4
Automatic extraction requires archive expansion software compatible with StuffIt Expander, available from Allume Systems, Inc. If the firmware update is not automatically extracted, install StuffIt Expander or other compatible archive expansion software and extract the update.

Copy the firmware to the memory card

The firmware can be copied to the camera memory card either by connecting the computer directly to the camera using the USB cable, or by removing the memory card from the camera and inserting it in a card reader.

Important
Only one of the two sets of firmware (A or B) can be updated at a time. Use separate memory cards for each set of firmware, or update one set as described below, then format the memory card and repeat the process for the second set.
